Facing death has many different challenges. In the weeks since receiving the news that Markus’ cancer is advancing in spite of all efforts made to treat it, we have been processing God’s will for us as we move forward. While we are doing our best to live well, the reality of his death is never far from our minds.
As we worshiped this Easter morning with our church family the pastor encouraged us to look at all of life, including our deaths, through the lens of the resurrection of Jesus. Everything about the resurrection seems more real for us this year, most importantly the beautiful understanding that death is not the end but an entrance into eternal glory with Jesus.
Markus continues to live life to the fullest. He spent the entire past week with his buddies in the mountains making memories together, sharing good times as their bond grows stronger through Markus’ suffering. His energy levels are getting a bit lower and he definitely likes his ten to twelve hours of sleep every night. Other than his banged up arm he isn’t experiencing any terribly negative symptoms yet.
It was also incredibly humbling to receive a substantial financial gift that will allow us to enjoy some fun times together as family while Markus still has energy and strength. A gift from God for sure! We are planning a few things including attending the March for Life in Victoria (a family tradition) and then spending some nights together with our entire family at an AirBnB on Vancouver Island. Markus is also planning a trip with Micah to Alberta to see Sara and Aidan and maybe some cousins.
It feels surreal to be planning these things with the knowledge that in the near future God is going to call Markus home. Yet, it is such a blessing to have this meaningful time together. We know it’s bittersweet, and for now we’re focusing on the sweet part. Markus’ simple but strong faith continues to be apparent, even to the point where he will say, “I’m going to be okay…but I feel bad for my family and friends who are going to miss me so much.” Yes Jesus, the best is yet to come for all who believe you are the life and the resurrection!
Thanks again for your all prayers. It means a lot to know so many people care for us and our family. For as long as we can we’re going to focus on living well. Please pray that Markus doesn’t suffer much and that God would be merciful in ensuring him a peaceful conclusion to his life on earth.
